Social media, its pros and cons

Introduction:

Socail media are all platforms on the internet that allow people to create,share or exchange information, ideas and have live chats online. It ranges from internet forums to social blogs, social networks, etc. it has indeed helped many people and has made the world a small place in that someone can be at the comfort of one’s room and know what’s happening elsewhere and chat with friends, families and loved ones both far and near. It has many advantages and disadvantages which I will like to discuss here:

It’s advantages:
1. It has created new social connections: it hass made communication easier and faster and has reconnected friends that lost contacts. People have also made new friends and business associates through the social media
2. Provision of employment: It has provided employment for people who work as bloggers, blog designers, as consultants on special matters  and has also provided jobs for people who work in social networking industries.
3. Improvement in the quality of education: students now discuss scholl matters with peers on whatsapp groups, bbm channel, facebook groups,etc and also with fellow students in other parts of the world.

These are some of the advantages, lets now look at the disadvantages
1. Decrease in face-to face discussions: People now prefer chatting up friends online to face-to-face discussions which has reduced feelings and mutual attractions that ought to exist between friends and families.
2. Reduction in academic grades of students who overuse them: Pupils who excessively use social media spend more time on them and less time on their studies which reduce their performance in school.
3. Misinformation: False information are spread on blogs and other social media sites. Owners and users of some blogs post false information and these has led to unnecessary panics to the populace. Also, many students have gotten false information from people who claim to be authorities in their fields.
4. Increase in crime rate:  People now use social media to dupe others and also get information about someone’s residence, income, work place, and attack them. Also, more rape cases have been recorded because of what  people paste and talk about online that corrupts minds.

Conclusion
In as much as social media have helped so much, we should also be aware of its cons so as not to fall a victim of criminals, or misinformation.
